APRIL 2019

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”—which means glorious weather is bound to be here before we know it! That’s why there’s no better time than now to take the steps necessary to achieve healthy, radiant skin that seems to “blossom” just in time for spring. From skincare that helps reset and refresh your complexion to treatments that reveal a new-and-improved you (before Mother’s Day!), we have a variety of specials to help you get a jump-start before the new season is in full swing.

April is also Rosacea Awareness Month—and according to the National Rosacea Society, this common skin condition affects up to 16 million Americans of all ethnicities. If you experience facial flushing, burning or stinging—especially after specific “triggers” (see this month’s Ask Dr. B. below to learn more)—Dr. Boakye can determine if you’re dealing with rosacea, and help you get symptoms under control with the ideal treatments and medications.

15% off the products you need for brighter skin!

The easiest way to refresh your skin for spring is to send those dark spots packing, and achieving radiant skin with more even skin tone is easier than you think! Our Botanical Brightening Pads feature kojic acid, arbutin and bearberry to help fade unwanted pigment—plus antioxidant green tea to protect the skin from further damage. Twice-daily use (followed by sunscreen every morning) is all it takes to see brighter, spring-worthy skin in no time flat—and this month we’re offering 15% off our Botanical Brightening Pads, Sheer Physical Sunscreen and Tinted Antioxidant Sunscreen. And if you order the Brightening Pads and one of our sunscreens, we’ll give you two of our hydrating masks (which are usually only available after in-office treatments)! Offer ends April 30, 2019.

Pre-Mother’s Day micro needling special

Microneedling is a wonderful way to rejuvenate the eye area—and this minimal-downtime treatment helps tighten saggy skin on the eyelids. Performed with local anesthetic to maximize patient comfort, the microneedling device creates tiny wounds that stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production during the healing process—and results in a refreshed, brighter-eyed appearance. This month, enjoy 10% off when you purchase a package of three treatments (regular price: $750). Offer ends April 30, 2019.

Love your lips this spring!

Let Dr. Boakye give your lips an instant boost in time for Mother’s Day and the new season ahead! Whether you’ve always wanted a plumper pout or you lips have become thinner over time, Juvéderm and Restylane are ideal for enhancing volume and restoring definition to the lip border with natural-looking results. This month we’re offering this injectable lip-enhancing treatment for $600 (a 20% discount off the regular price of $800). Offer ends April 30, 2019.

Are you on the keto diet?

Dr. Boakye believes diet plays a major role in our overall health, as well as the appearance of the skin. Although she personally advocates a plant-based diet that includes fish as a source of protein, she also knows that many patients are turning to the keto diet to lose or maintain their weight. However, the keto diet has been associated with a rash called prurigo pigmentosa, which can cause red, itchy bumps on the neck, back and abdomen. It’s important to keep in mind that this rash can be caused by any low-carb diet, as well as diabetes and other factors that prompt the body to burn fat as fuel. Keto rash is often mistaken for eczema, and these bumps can become brown or pigmentated over time, which is why it’s essential to make an appointment if you experience any sudden skin changes whether you’re dieting or not.

Ask Dr. B.

Since April is Rosacea Awareness Month, I’d like to take this opportunity to emphasize a few key points about this common skin condition. Many patients often struggle with symptoms for years before setting foot in my office, and it’s unnecessary to live with the flushing, facial redness, stinging and burning. Even more important to know is that rosacea can progress to include symptoms that are more difficult to manage if left untreated.

Rosacea may be more common in fair-skinned Caucasians of northern European descent, but this skin condition can affect all skin tones, including black skin. Here, two examples of rosacea in darker skin.

The first step for controlling rosacea symptoms is knowing—and avoiding—your unique triggers. These can include:

  • Sun exposure: Be sure to wear a physical-based SPF 30 on a daily basis and seek shade when possible.

  • Foods and drinks: Spicy foods, hot drinks, caffeine and alcohol can all cause rosacea flare-ups.

  • Hot and cold temperatures: Prevent overheating and protect your face from cold air with a scarf.

  • Friction: Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or massaging your face.

  • Skincare products: Hair spray and other products that contain alcohol are known rosacea triggers.

Although there is no cure for rosacea (yet), there are topical and oral medications that can help control the condition. My treatment approach varies from patient to patient, so it’s imperative to come into the office for a definitive diagnosis as well as the appropriate prescriptions. Again, I’ll give you specific instructions about how to use these medications, but consistent use is key for managing symptoms, and once they are under control most patients can cut back to using them two to three times a week to maintain improvement (in addition to avoiding their triggers).

Have you tried Karité Hydrating Body Cream?

Formulated by Dr. Boakye with unrefined shea butter sourced from Ghana, organic coconut oil and an antioxidant-rich blend of botanical extracts (and very little else), this decadent body treatment is just what your skin needs to weather the winter months beautifully and comfortably. Ideal for all skin types and extremely effective for problem spots like knees, elbows and feet, it’s also safe and effective for soothing eczema symptoms.
