Is your skin ready for summer?

If summer’s heat is taking a toll on your skin, restore lost moisture to your hands and body with Karité Shea Butter! Eat your way to healthier skin

An antioxidant-rich diet can benefit the entire body both inside and out. Summer means a variety of fruits and vegetables are finally in season, here’s a short list of foods to fill your plate with, as well as the antioxidants they contain.

  • Carrots: Vitamin A, beta carotene

  • Tomato: Vitamin C, lycopene

  • Avocado: Vitamin E

  • Corn: Lutein, zeaxanthin

  • Watermelon: Lycopene

  • Apple: Phytochemicals

More is more when it comes to antioxidants, which is why it’s important to get a variety of them. This is actually quite easy if you try to eat many different-colored fruits and vegetables. It’s also a good idea to stick to a low-glycemic diet (with limited sugar, fried and processed foods) and turn to fish, chicken, yogurt and cheese as your main sources of protein. You can also add supplements—such as collagen peptides, zinc, vitamin D and vitamin E—into your wellness routine. After a short period of time on this “healthy skin diet,” you just might see improvement in acne, eczema and psoriasis, as well as a more radiant complexion.

Ask Dr. B.: Your Summer Skin Survival Kit

Spending more time outdoors increases the changes of experiencing a variety of skin issues and concerns… In most cases, these season-specific problems can be tended to at home, but it’s important to have the right products on hand so you’re prepared for any summer skin-related matters that may come your way.

Sunburn: Perhaps the most common skin concern come summer, sunburncan occur if you forget to reapply (especially after swimming or sweating), or if you miss a spot when applying sunscreen (be mindful of often-missed areas like the tops of the feet, ears and along the edges of your swimsuit). To minimize discomfort, take a cool shower or bath and apply moisturizer while skin is still damp. Products with aloe or soy can be especially soothing, and over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can be used as well. (Avoid products that contain “-caine” as they can be irritating or cause allergic reaction.) If necessary, ibuprofen or aspirin can help reduce swelling, redness and discomfort. If blisters form, allow them to heal, and take care to protect sunburned skin from additional sun exposure until symptoms have resolved.

Bug bites: Summer and insects go hand in hand, and unfortunately most of us will get bitten at some point. Many patients ask me which ingredients to look for in an insect repellent, and DEET and picardin are the most effective against mosquitoes, ticks and flies. The main difference is that DEET may damage plastics and other synthetic materials—and both of these ingredients are considered to be safe and effective for the entire family. In the event you get bitten, an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream applied twice a day can help relieve the itching and inflammation. Non-drowsy antihistamines like Claritin and Allegra can help as well.

Poison ivy and other plant reactions: Prevention is key when it comes to avoiding rashes caused by contact with poison ivy and other irritating plants. Protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants are always a good idea if you’re hiking or in the woods—and proper gloves are essential as well. If you find yourself with a plant-based rash and over-the-counter hydrocortisone doesn’t help alleviate the redness, itching and inflammation (or you notice any other unusual symptoms), a trip to the office may be warranted.
