Is your skin prepared for fall?

Cooler temperatures and drier air will be here before we know it, but Karité Shea Butter can keep your skin smooth, soft and comfortable. Formulated by Dr. Boakye with unrefined shea butter sourced from Ghana, organic coconut oil and an antioxidant-rich blend of botanical extracts (and very little else), the Hand Crème and Hydrating Body Crème are ideal for all skin types and extremely effective for problem spots like knees, elbows and feet—and they're also safe for soothing eczema symptoms.

What Dr. Boakye did on her summer vacation…

“My recent trip to Ghana was an amazing time spent with family and giving back. My sisters and I met with female cooperatives who pick shea nuts to get an inside look at their daily activities, as well as their hardships. It was a humbling and enlightening experience. I was reminded that we are so blessed and that it is important to give back when you can. I attended Wellesley College, whose mission and value is, Non Ministrari sed Ministrare. This translates to, “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister,” and I feel that I am finally doing this in my life. My trip reaffirmed that the best way to make a difference in the world is to empower and lead others.”

Ask Dr. B.

Question: What’s the deal with expiration dates on skincare products? Are they for real, or just a way for companies to get us to buy more?

Answer: This is a great question, and it actually prompted me to go through the many open bottles in my own bathroom that I don’t use anymore. Not only did I find several expired products that promptly went in the trash, I reduced the clutter and freed up some much-needed space!

Yes, expiration dates are there for a few reasons. For starters, many active ingredients lose their potency over time due to air and light exposure—and eventually become useless. Products can also become contaminated with bacteria (especially jars that require you to use your fingers to scoop out product), which is a main reason that preservative ingredients are used. Preservatives lose their effectiveness over time as well, and you definitely don’t want to use skincare products with bacteria and other microbes, right? It’s especially important to be mindful of expiration dates if you opt for natural or organic skincare, since these products generally avoid synthetic preservatives.

In some cases, it may be necessary to toss a product before the expiration date on the package. If you notice any change in smell, color or consistency (or if the product separates), it’s time to say goodbye—and if you’re unsure if a product is still OK to use, it’s best to play it safe and throw it away.
